This Costa Rica family travel story highlights our experience during an All-Inclusive holiday at the JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort.

From sunbathing with iguanas and enjoying fresh ceviche, to beachside roasted marshmallows under golden sunsets –life’s true joys do come from the simplest pleasures and, this spot at the heart of Costa Rica’s North Pacific coast made it happen for us.

Welcome & Pura Vida¹!

¹ Pura Vida [POO-rah VEE-dhah] is a popular Costa Rican expression that translates literally to ‘pure life.’ However, its meaning goes far beyond the words themselves. It embodies the laid-back, positive, and grateful lifestyle that Costa Ricans, Ticos embrace.

But first, rest

Traveling as a family that loves active golf days and tropical mornings in the sun means figuring out the necessary sleep arrangements the night before –making sure all family members get the quality rest necessary to wake up fully replenished and recharged.

The JW Marriott Guanacaste made this seamless for us. After watching the sun dip at Mansita Beach and getting back to our room, housekeeping staff arrived at our doorstep with a full bed setup in tow—providing comfy, extra pillows—to ensure our little restless sleeper would be as comfortable as possible.

The room had one King Size bed, so the extra bed fit nicely between the wall and our bed, conveniently doubling as railing for extra safety. This is the first thing mentioned in this article, as our vacation would have definitely not been the same without this important detail.

INSIDER TIP:

Resort offerings can change according to season—always verify what is included in your stay to make the most of your experience.

Waking up to Swaying Sea Waves

Our first morning at the JW Marriott Guanacaste greeted us with the sound of waves and a salt-infused breeze you can only associate with a tropical haven like this.

If you’re staying at one of the resort’s oceanfront rooms you’ll notice you’re mere steps away from the beach —an open invitation to enjoy Costa Rica’s natural beauty.

What is the Best Tee Time at Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course?

The best tee time at Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course depends on your preference:

Early Morning (6:30AM – 8:30 AM) – The best choice for a faster-paced game (mid-week.) You’ll also have the best chance of spotting wildlife like deer, iguanas, and howler monkeys.

Afternoon & Twilight Golf (2:30PM – 4:00 PM) – A great option for those who enjoy golden-hour golf, with softer light and cooler conditions as the sun starts to set.

Hacienda Pinilla Golf Club offers discounted rates for Twilight Golf  (Tee time after 1PM) and Super Twilight Golf (Tee time after 3PM) so be sure to check out their updated rates directly on their website. Afternoon rounds might be windier depending of the time of the year, but they will also offer some of the most stunning ocean views, especially near sunset.

Lounging iguana by the pool at JW Marriott Guanacaste

Pura Vida Sunbathing Mates

Guanacaste’s rich biodiversity stands out among the happiest discoveries for travelers visiting Costa Rica’s remotely secluded areas –such as Hacienda Pinilla, where JW Marriott Guanacaste is located. During our stay we saw countless varieties of birds, butterflies and tropical flowers.

But perhaps the most fascinating encounters were those with relaxed iguanas, casually lounging next to us by the poolside, as if joining our tropical sunbathing session –a true embodiment of the Pura Vida spirit.

On the lookout for signs of Hope and Good Luck

If you consider yourself a believer, and are staying at the JW Marriott Guanacaste or any surrounding areas in Guanacaste, make sure to be on the lookout for “Esperanzas²Tettigoniidae family –also known as ‘bush crickets’ or Katydids.

Among Guanacaste’s many cultural traditions, the ‘Esperanza²’ stands out as a tiny but powerful symbol of good fortune. Catching a glimpse of this vivid green insect is said to bring good luck.

During our stay we saw a couple of them hanging at our doorstep as we entered or exited our room.

Poolside & Beach Fun

Fun at a tropical oceanfront resort might mean something slightly different for every family.

If your family is more into walking by the beach and spending hours building sand castles, the JW Marriott Guanacaste is perfect for that, just as it is for spending your whole day by the pool enjoying the ocean sounds, iguana visits and poolside splashes.

Tico Coffee Shop & Pastry Delicacies

The JW Marriott Guanacaste features its own gelato and coffee shop. Our All-Inclusive package treated us to Costa Rican coffee beverages, sweet and salty food items and soft beverages during our entire stay.

INSIDER TIP:

Confirm what’s included in your package at the JW Marriott Guanacaste, so you can plan accordingly.

The warm, friendly staff added an extra layer of sweetness to an already sweet afternoon stop every single time.

Costa Rican coffee bags and souvenirs are not included in All Inclusive packages, but they sure make great gifts to bring back home.

Infinite Sunsets

During Costa Rica’s dry season, Playa Mansita—the tranquil beach right in front of JW Marriott Guanacaste—becomes a prime spot for some picture-worthy and unforgettable sunsets.

We visited in October, during Costa Rica’s rainy or ‘green’ season and were still able to enjoy some beautiful sunsets.

INSIDER TIP:

Costa Rica’s weather patterns can be highly unpredictable, with the dry season usually spanning from December to March or April. However, it could casually deliver you a stunningly clear sunset during August or September. The key to enjoying Costa Rica? Embrace the moment, rain or shine.

Dining at JW Marriott Guanacaste

The JW Marriott Guanacaste features 4 different restaurants, a pool bar, and a sports bar.

Sabanero Steakhouse –for premium cuts, Tamarine –Asian fusion dining, Sandbar –Artisan beer and signature burgers, Azul –locally inspired seafood, and Pimento– for authentic Italian comfort –All of which were included in our All-Inclusive stay.

A few standout dishes left a lasting impression during our stay at JW Marriott Guanacaste.

Among them, were the freshly-prepared ceviche we got to enjoy oceanfront at Azul, while dinner at Pimento gave us a comforting taste of Italy, with the prosciutto & pecorino antipasto, and a special caponata, thoughtfully prepared by the chef that evening.

Tropical After Sun Reset & Skincare Rituals

A sun-soaked day in Guanacaste’s tropical dry climate might mean your skin will need more than just SPF—it will need a deep hydration boost.

This area’s dry tropics may cause your skin to feel a bit more thirsty than usual after full days outdoors, so be sure to pack a rich, deeply hydrating face moisturizer—your skin will thank you after every golden hour!

INSIDER TIP:

Gently tapping a couple of drops of camellia oil before your normal moisturizer might work miracles for your skin while visiting dry tropical areas. Just as a soothing, hydrating lip mask for overnight recovery may feel as an absolute life saver.

History & Local Heritage in Every Corner

If you’re into learning about local history and culture while traveling, the JW Marriott Guanacaste will have something for you in almost every corner.

In many ways, walking its hallways feels like taking a journey through time with its red terrace floors and colonial-style candelabras—as if pulled straight from the pages of a Latin American period novel.

Soothing Wind Downs in Tico³ Style

After a day filled with tropical explorations, poolside splashes, and endless excitement, settling little travelers down for the night can feel like a challenge.

Following the usual steps of your normal sleep routine at home can help your little explorers get in the mindset for rest —even during an exhilarating tropical vacation.

My Blue Mariposa is one of our bedtime favorites, a beautifully-illustrated children’s book, perfect for learning Spanish at the same time you learn about Costa Rica’s most fascinating natural species.

This book was written by author Jodie Marie Fisher as her tribute to Costa Rica, a country she fell in love with at first sight during a college exchange experience.

The Bilingual Children’s Book: My Blue Mariposa features 57 varieties of plants, ten different species of butterflies, and 15 varieties of insects and animals —all carefully hand-drawn, and colored with a pencil technique by Costa Rican artist Ruth Angulo of Casa Garabato.

If your family wants to learn about Costa Rica’s natural wonders while practicing your Spanish reading and listening skills, this book is a must-have.

Hasta luego⁴’ Guanacaste

Our family holiday at the JW Marriott Guanacaste was definitely worth the distance. If you’re considering a place to spend 3 or 4 days of your Costa Rican vacation, enjoying high-quality family time, you should definitely consider their All Inclusive package, or similar offerings.

Make sure to check out their social media for updates on available packages throughout the year.

‘Hasta luego’ means ‘see you later’ in Spanish. A very common, Costa Rican greeting among locals.

For a month, my wife and I lived in San José and Guanacaste, Costa Rica, immersing ourselves in the culture and lifestyle. While she spent her time working remotely, I dove deep into the golfer community, golf courses, and the people who make Costa Rica a special place.

Christine Levinson and Aron Levinson

In this GOLFPEDIA Costa Rica featured article, international golf content creator Aron Levinson from bogey2putt recounts his firsthand experience of golfing in Costa Rica, sharing his personal insights from planning to blending into the tico¹ golf community—and even negotiating fairway space with iguanas. Aron takes us through his month-long journey exploring Costa Rica: the land of Pura Vida Golf.

Costa Rica Golf: Assumptions vs. Reality

Before my month-long golf trip to Costa Rica, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Costa Rica’s golf scene.

From my initial research, it seemed like most of the courses were private country clubs, making me question whether bringing my clubs would be worth the hassle.

I worried that I’d land in Costa Rica only to find myself with nowhere to play.  But once I arrived and connected with the local golf community, I quickly realized that accessibility wasn’t an issue—it just required being friendly and asking the right questions.

Left: 17th hole at Tres Volcanes Golf Course | Right: Valle del Sol Golf Course

For example, Valle del Sol is a public 18-hole course, and Los Reyes Country Club is a public 9-hole course, even though it’s inside a private living community.

The word “country club” initially made me assume it was private, but that wasn’t the case.  I also learned that while Ocean Course – Peninsula Papagayo is a private course, guests staying at the Four Seasons or Andaz can book tee times and pay to play.

The more I spoke with local golfers, the more I was guided to courses I could access as a non-member.  Some even invited me to play as their guest, reinforcing the welcoming nature of Costa Rica’s golf community.

Beyond golf, my weather concerns were also off base.  The February forecast for San José showed daily showers, so I packed two umbrellas, a rain jacket, and rain gloves—none of which I ever used.  A local reminded me that Costa Rica has multiple microclimates, meaning the weather apps aren’t always reliable.  If I had trusted the forecast, I might have reconsidered bringing my clubs, and I would have missed out on some incredible golf experiences.

After 20 Years of Visiting Costa Rica, Why We Keep Coming Back

Costa Rica is known for its breathtaking natural beauty, biodiversity, and commitment to sustainability. It’s admired for its lush rainforests, stunning beaches, and active volcanoes, making it a top destination for eco-tourism and adventure seekers.

Costa Rica is also recognized for its Pura Vida lifestyle, which embodies a laid-back, positive, and community-oriented way of life. It extends beyond just a slogan you see on a billboard—it’s a cultural philosophy that emphasizes happiness, gratitude, and simplicity. When someone says, “pura vida” they mean it.

Beyond nature and culture, Costa Rica is gaining recognition for its growing golf scene, with world-class courses offering stunning ocean and rainforest backdrops, top-tier hospitality, and a welcoming golf community. It’s easy to see why we keep coming back.

A Month of Firsts on Costa Rican Golf Courses: 20 Unforgettable Moments

During my time here, I played six incredible courses, each offering unique challenges, breathtaking views, and world-class hospitality.

17th hole at Tres Volcanes Golf Course

I played at Cariari Country Club, Valle del Sol, Los Reyes Country Club, Tres Volcanes Golf Course, Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course, and my last round was at the private course, Ocean Course – Peninsula Papagayo.

Left: Orlando at Cariari Country Club | Right: Bogey2Putt's golf clubs at Cariari Country Club

The hospitality and openness to shoot content and tell genuine golf stories welcomed me with open arms. But beyond the scorecards, which never broke 90, this trip was filled with firsts that made it unforgettable:

  1. Played with a caddie, who not only helped me navigate Cariari Country Club but also read the greens and shared insights into the local culture.
  2. Experienced golf in Spanish, navigating tee times, small talk, and camaraderie in my second language while learning a ton of new golf vocabulary like hierros² and hoyos³.
  3. Played the 15th hole at Hacienda Pinilla with an ocean backdrop that made me pause mid-round just to take it all in. (I also par’d it from the fringe.)

² Hierros is the Spanish term used to refer to golf irons.

³ When talking golf in Spanish, Hoyos is the word for holes.

  1. Saw monkeys swinging through the trees on the course, a beautiful moment that reminded me I wasn’t in my usual Los Angeles golf environment.
  2. Stored my golf gear overnight at the course, a testament to the hospitality and trust ingrained in the culture.
  3. Ate maracuyá (passion fruit) on the course, a refreshing and healthy mid-round snack I didn’t know I needed, but will wish I had back home in Los Angeles.
  4. Visited an indoor simulator in San Jose (Par5CR), proving the golf culture extends beyond the traditional courses.
Left: PAR5CR Golf Center- VIP Room | Right: Mini Golf CR
  1. Witnessed the most creative mini-golf course I’ve ever seen at Mini Golf CR (The Land Rover hole is a must play)
  2. Played with a former golf professional player and Top ranked golf coach by US Kids, USGTF and GAA (Alejandro Duque), gaining insights into the game (both mentally and physically) from someone who has competed at the highest level.
  3. Created my first What’s In The Bag golf content, in Spanish.
  4. Battled 25+ mph winds, learning how to adjust my game and stay patient through the challenge.
  5. Made my first quadruple bogey in Costa Rica, a humbling reminder that golf doesn’t care about location.

  1. Witnessed a chip-in for birdie!
  2. Enjoyed mahi mahi ceviche at the 19th hole at Tres Volcanes, it was the best ceviche I’ve eaten and by far the best food after a round of golf.
  3. Played nine holes with my wife, sharing a special moment (and plenty of laughs) in a country we both love and appreciate.
  4. Didn’t break 90 in Costa Rica, which only means one thing—I have to come back and try again.
Left: 14th Hole at Tres Volcanes Golf Course | Right: Busted tee at Tres Volcanes Golf Course
  1. Met some of the friendliest greenskeepers, taking time to personally thank them for their work and having Yeffrey of Hacienda Pinilla take my approach shot from 74 yards out. Without this hardworking and dedicated crew, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy this incredible game.
  2. Forgot some golf clubs at the JW Marriott Guanacaste and, after a five-day hunt, found them right where I left them—a rollercoaster of emotions ending in relief.
  3. Saw that pace of play expectations were printed on the scorecard, a great way to reinforce the importance of keeping up the pace.
  4. Had to wait to cross the bridge to the next hole, as an iguana held his ground.  Tough negotiation, but ended civilly.

More Than Golf—It’s About the People

One of the most memorable moments of this trip was participating in a Challenge Golf Charity Tournament at Cariari Country Club, where I saw firsthand how the game of golf can bring people together for a greater cause. The willingness to connect, to share stories, laugh, and to embrace new friendships made me realize how special this place is.

The Costa Rican golf community embodies the true spirit of Pura Vida—offering before expecting, giving without asking, and creating bonds that feel like they could last a lifetime.

This trip wasn’t just about playing golf in a new country—it was about discovering a new way of living, one where relationships, experiences, and genuine human connections matter more than the final score.

If you’re a golfer looking for an unforgettable destination, Costa Rica should be at the top of your list. Whether you’re after championship-caliber courses, breathtaking scenery, warm hospitality, or simply the chance to experience Pura Vida on the fairways, Costa Rica has something special waiting for you.

And if I ever needed another reason to return? Well, I still haven’t broken 90 in Costa Rica.

Lovely plush sloths and furry friends, ‘Made in Costa Rica’ children’s molding dough, and hand-made Costa Rica artisan crafts and souvenirs will be everywhere, so this might be a perfect time to take a small piece of Costa Rica with you as you return home.

Wind down favorite: In Room Dining & Learning about Costa Rica’s biodiversity

After a day of fun under the Costa Rican sun– you and your family might be ready for a cozy in-room dinner and your favorite quiet time / wind down activity that helps you connect to local culture.

A good recommendation is a book called ‘Flowers Coloridas’, which might be perfect for just that. Written by a dear friend of GOLFPEDIA’s: Jodie Marie Fisher– this book combines simple sentences for learning the Spanish language, while also learning about Costa Rica’s many different flower species. The book’s author is a mom, musician, and author of several other children’s learning titles like My Blue Mariposa and Butterflies Coloridas, among many others.

Reading Flowers Coloridas with our little one has been a go-to wind-down family activity for years now and–golf vacations away from home have not been the exception. Hopefully, your family can enjoy this children’s book as well.

What is the best time of day to play at La Iguana Golf Course?

With Costa Rica’s highly humid conditions running for most of the year (dry season goes from December to April) you might find it a better idea to tee off as early as possible. TheGolfplusOne reports: “Whenever my husband tees off later than 6:30am, he never fails to mention extreme thermal sensation on the course.” This may be somewhat relieved by La Iguana’s friendly beverage cart, but only temporarily, so it may be wise to take your precautions.
